What to expect in your first Cycle 24 class

Forty-five minutes, cycling shoes provided, no experience required. Here is how a first ride at Team 24 Fitness actually goes.

Forty-five minutes, cycling shoes provided, no experience required. Here is how a first ride at Team 24 Fitness actually goes.

Before you leave the house

Cycle 24 is indoors at the Granbury studio, 2461 East US Hwy 377 A. Rides are Monday at 6pm, Tuesday at 5:30pm, and Thursday at 5:30pm. Pick one and leave early enough to be on the bike at the start, not in the lot during a warmup you missed. A single class is $24. You do not need your own bike, and you do not need cycling shoes.

Wear clothes you can sweat in and bring water. If you have ridden outside or taken a class somewhere else, say so when you arrive. The idea is the same. The room is smaller, and Dawn Skinner is the coach. First-timers and regulars share the class because the work scales.

The first ten minutes

Show up a few minutes early. We will get you clipped in and set the bike to your height. The shoes are provided, so do not buy a pair to prove you are serious. Seat height and handlebar position matter more than toughness. A bike that does not fit will make a 45-minute ride feel like a mistake, and the mistake will not be the class.

Tell the coach if your knees, back, or hips are already complaining. Resistance has a knob for a reason. You are allowed to use less of it than the person next to you. Nobody is scoring the room.

What the 45 minutes feel like

You will climb, push, and recover. The effort is coached. The resistance is yours. That is why a new rider and a regular can sit in the same class without one of them being lost and the other being bored. If you spend the hour trying to match a neighbor, you will miss the point and probably your knees.

Expect to be warm and a little unsure of the calls the first time. That passes. What should not pass is pain that is not effort. Say something. A smaller room only helps if the coach can hear you, and Dawn can, if you use the voice.

What a second week should settle

By the second ride you should know your bike setup without a long explanation, and you should have a resistance you can survive. If the first class felt like a test you failed, the resistance was too high or you arrived late. Fix those. Do not decide indoor cycling is not for you off one sloppy start.

Keep the appointment small until it is boringly reliable. One ride a week is enough to learn the room. Three rides, plus mornings, plus stretch, is Unlimited, and it is a different amount of Granbury time. Earn it by showing up, not by buying it on the way out the door while you are still sweating.

After you unclip

Drink water, take the shoes off, and notice whether you would come back on purpose. One ride is a complete visit. Unlimited rides are $149 a month if the bike is going to be the habit rather than a guest appearance. You do not have to decide that in the parking lot.

If the format clicked and you also want strength work, the same building runs group class Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 5:30am, and personal training with Brandon Sledge. Unlimited stacks three spin classes, three group classes, and five stretch sessions. Stacking is a second decision. The first decision is whether you will be on a bike again next week. Book that ride before you talk yourself into a bigger week.
